There are some fantastic schemes taking place in and around Noordhoek to help people in need during this lock down period. The Noordhoek Ratepayers supports these initiatives and encourages residents to help out wherever they can!
Masiphumelele Creative Hub: During lockdown this Masi-based organisation has started a feeding scheme for kids up to five years old and vulnerable elderly people. This initiative, started by Yandiswa Mazwana in 2017, is usually an after-care centre for kids that also puts together vegetable boxes for the elderly. Contact ymazwana@gmail.com or 071 358 6289.
Friendly Grocer & Shorties Blue Bottle: During lockdown, Delfino de Sousa from Shorties Blue Bottle Liquors has placed a box at the Friendly Grocer to collect essential food items. Delfino says, “When you’re buying your essentials, please add an item like rice or soup packets or anything you can to your shopping. Give it to the cashier to put in the box. Every little bit helps.” This initiative has been done in partnership with the CareCompany.
The Safe House Trust: This is one of 17 shelters for gender-based violence victims in the region. During lockdown, to avoid the spread of COVID-19 to other shelters, all new cases (clients) will be sent to The Safe House shelter to be cared for during an isolation period. If clients do not show symptoms after 21 days, they will be moved to the other shelters in the area. “We are trying to stop people who have the virus going into shelters and infecting people there,” says Penny Skirving. The Safe House has increased their number of beds and added a new bathroom but needs food items, kitchen crockery, cutlery, appliances, linen, etc. Contact Penny Skirving on 064 704 3829.
Food Lovers & Pick n Pay at Longbeach Mall: You’ll find boxes at the cashiers in these shops for food items that are being donated to feeding schemes in Masi. This is part of the official initiative by our local Sub-Council and it’s various partners including Shoprite.
NoordhoekCAN: We are the local initiative of Cape Town Together – a rapid community response made up of volunteers from all over Noordhoek (& beyond) coming together to self-organise, take action, and stand in solidarity with local communities. Our current focus is gathering food, essentials and funds for NPOs and community workers operating in Masiphumlele. Email NoordhoekCANfood@gmail.com to donate or join NoordhoekCAN on WhatsApp https://chat.whatsapp.com/LwV17Vh0WnAEDHELkW9ZEb to offer your skills, resources and creative initiative.
Blankets, tents and food for the homeless: The Fish Hoek Community Police Forum has asked for urgent donations of food, blankets and tents. These are to assist with relocating homeless people from Fish Hoek to a safe area in Strandfontein for the duration of the lockdown. Please contact your local neighbourhood watch coordinator.
Feeding our Valley Fundraiser: Donate to this fund that liaises with the Far South COVID-19 Response Team, to purchase and distribute food parcels to the vulnerable in Masi, Ocean View and Redhill. Account name: Fowler Consulting Services, FNB, Acc. No. 627 258 03705, Branch Code 250655. https://youtu.be/21LWszHvbMM. The fund is being administrated by a local accounting firm Fowler Financial Services.
