The NRPA has evaluated the recent fire and reached the following conclusions:
• We were very lucky that the wind was favourable and are thankful for all the efforts of the various fire teams, local coordinators who kept residents informed and residents who donated supplies
• The Noordhoek WhatsApp Community proved its worth in informing 1100+ residents with accurate and up-to-date information. NRPA Exco members received many requests from new residents wanting to join. To facilitate/streamline these requests, NRPA will procure a mobile phone number for residents to reach out to
• The Facebook forum was unusually quiet, probably due to the WhatsApp community doing its work. This is good, since Facebook communications are not ‘real-time’, nor practical in the event of a crisis
• Communication from CoCT and SANParks was not always timely and complete. NRPA will see if we can improve communication channels with the Joint Operations Command to receive and pass on any relevant info to residents in the event of a crisis
• The opening/closing Chapman’s Peak Drive decisions were chaotic and frustrating. NRPA is in touch with MEC Simmers and ward councillors to discuss protocols in the event of the closure of another major road
• There was confusion around the ability to drop off supplies at the Noordhoek Community Centre. NRPA will discuss with VWS how this could be improved in future.
